The King County Medical Examiner’s Office is situated within the Prevention Division, which works to interrupt the transmission of communicable diseases including HIV, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, through surveillance, epidemiology, outbreak investigations, education, laboratory testing, and immunization. King County Medical Examiner’s Office The King County Medical Examiner’s Office (KCMEO) has been accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) since 1978. The office is located on the campus of Harborview Medical Center near downtown Seattle that was designed to KCMEO specifications and built in 2009. The busy office performs over 1,800 autopsies and 750 views each year and authorizes disposition for over 17,000 deaths. A team of 6 Forensic Pathologists plus the Chief, 7 Autopsy Technicians, and 17 Forensic Medicolegal Death Investigators work together to determine manner and cause of death for sudden and unusual deaths as required by state law (RCW 68.5). KCMEO collaborates with Harborview Medical Center Radiology Services for postmortem CT imaging. The Washington State Forensic Anthropologist and Forensic Anthropology Technician are employed at KCMEO, providing forensic anthropology consultation for King County and the entire state. A full time Applied Forensic Epidemiologist supports the office’s data management, informatics, and epidemiology needs. KCMEO plays an important role in educating future pathologists by hosting two (2) Forensic Pathology Fellows each year, accredited by ACGME, and hosts rotations of medical students and residents. The office conducts weekly educational conferences that are accredited though the University of Washington School of Medicine for a maximum of 52 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. The Chief and Associates receive clinical faculty appointments in the University of Washington Department of Pathology and conduct scholarly activities. The office also has the nationally recognized Real Time Fatal Drug Overdose Surveillance Program with three (3) full time staff and several interns. In addition to performing complete forensic autopsies, pathologists testify in court and depositions, provide consultation for families, law enforcement, and attorneys, and participate in teaching medical students and residents. In addition to our generous King County benefits package, this position may be eligible for up to $15,000 in relocation funds for the successful candidate. Details of requests for the reimbursement of moving expenses are evaluated based on the eligibility criteria outlined in King County Code and are subject to approval. This position is responsible for providing leadership to the Office of the Medical examiner, in close collaboration with the program’s health services administrator, Associate Medical Examiners, and Forensic Anthropologist. Duties include providing direction to and oversight of autopsies, policies and procedures, data collection and management, and aligning these activities with national guidance and best practices and applicable state, local and federal laws. The Chief will also collaborate with staff with equity and social justice expertise and support section efforts to transform the work culture and workforce that reflects King County demographics. The Chief is responsible for ensuring the office maintains National Association of Medical Examiner’s accreditation and performs a limited autopsy caseload, as allowed by other administrative duties. The chief also participates in scholarly and educational activities for fellows, medical students, and residents. Organizationally, this position reports to the Prevention Division Director. Required Experience and Credentials: Certification in Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Five (5) years’ experience working as a Board-Certified Forensic Pathologist. Washington State Medical License and Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain upon hire. Providing medically and scientifically accurate expert testimony in court and provide consultation for criminal justice agencies and families. Representing the office at national, state and local forums, and building and maintaining relationships with partners in the criminal legal system, local medical community, local, state, tribal and federal public health organizations, the media and the public to advance public health priorities. Experience serving as spokesperson for the office including conducting media interviews on behalf of the department.
