Engines Technician III

The Engines Technician III will possess intermediate technical knowledge and hands-on experience building or repairing small engines. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our aerospace fleets. As an Engines Technician III, you will be responsible for performing a range of complex inspections, repairs, and modifications on engines, utilizing precision equipment and adhering to stringent industry standards. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team. With a commitment to excellence and attention to detail, you will contribute to the optimization of engine performance and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring and servicing systems
  • Diagnosing problems and troubleshooting equipment
  • Running tests and completing reports
  • Updating and improving existing systems
  • Repairing or replacing faulty equipment
  • Implementing preventative maintenance procedures
  • Understanding and communicating the production needs of the engine build process to the engine team, engineers, and management.
  • Use work orders to determine the type of quantity of assemblies to manufacture.
  • Testing and maintaining small aircraft engines as well as the manufacture of their related sub-assemblies and associated parts.
  • Measure components to close tolerances.
  • Set and verify part clearances.
  • Exhaust and intake porting. Valve setting.
  • Verify conformance of parts to stock lists or Drawings using measuring instruments, such as calipers, gauges, or micrometers.
  • Accurate use of measuring equipment and the required hand tools.
  • Assemble systems of gears by aligning and meshing gears in gearboxes.
  • Testing of parts using non-destructive methods.
  • Engine build record maintenance with component history data.
  • Validate engine temperature, compression, RPM, etc.
  • Work with the production assistant on new work orders and the stock room personnel to acquire kits to build work orders
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience):

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • 2-4 years of working experience required.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Required to observe the engine build process and monitor for quality and reliability on an ongoing basis.
  • Engine teardown/build skills.
  • Proficient engine/transmission mechanical and electrical issue diagnostic skills.
  • Operate equipment such as hoists, jacks, hand tools, welding, wiring, etc.
  • Engine/transmission NVH instrumentation and testing.
  • Powertrain calibration diagnostics and controls experience.
  • Create/Maintain documentation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with office software and productivity tools.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work in a R&D and Production/Manufacturing environment (Constant)
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects of varying sizes and shapes up to and between 10 lbs. (Frequently) and 50 lbs. (Occasional)
  • Requires ability to perform the following: reaching, handling, turning/twisting, lifting/lowering, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, contact with metals and composites, exposure to moving parts and tools, pinch points, sharp cutters and slipping hazards, noise and atmospheric conditions, and the use of personal safety gear for face/eye, respiration, ears, and feet. (Frequent)
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, tools as needed. (Frequent)

The salary range for this role is: $30 - $43 AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
