Reading: Senior Political Affairs Officer UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs The position is located in the Peacebuilding Commission Support Branch in the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The incumbent reports directly to the Chief of the Branch. Established in 2005, PBSO aims to sustain peace by fostering international support for nationally owned and led peacebuilding efforts. It supports the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), manages the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) on behalf of the Secretary-General, and works to enhance system-wide coherence and partnerships with UN and non-UN actors to build and sustain peace in relevant countries. The DPPA primarily focuses on five action areas: analysis and early warning, conflict prevention and peacemaking, managing political crises and violent conflicts, sustaining peace, and strengthening partnerships. Its mandate is to prevent and resolve conflicts through inclusive political solutions. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Branch, the Senior Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for: Guidance and Supervision of Country Support Unit Providing guidance to desk officers and ensuring effective backstopping to various desks, including support to the PBC Chair, Chairs of the Country Configurations, and PBC members. Leading the formulation of the Unit's annual work plans, monitoring their progress, and contributing to the Branch's work plan development. Coordinating the daily work of the Desks to ensure timely and effective implementation of work plans. Developing engagement tools for the PBC with countries on its agenda and review exercises, and methodologies for tracking peacebuilding progress. Leading or coordinating the development of policy papers, briefs, and discussion papers for consideration. Contributing to reports to intergovernmental bodies such as the PBC, General Assembly, Security Council, ECOSOC, and others. Handling administrative duties related to the effectiveness of the Branch. Monitoring Political Situations Monitoring trends in countries on the PBC agenda to identify opportunities and threats to peacebuilding and recommending actions. Supporting the identification of candidate countries for PBC inclusion and monitoring key peacebuilding issues. Establishing/Strengthening Partnerships Identifying and leading efforts to establish or strengthen strategic partnerships with regional and global stakeholders. Enhancing partnerships with other UN entities and participating in inter-agency mechanisms. Supporting PBSO leadership in engagements with UN leadership at the country level. Representing PBSO in national, regional, or international meetings as needed. Qualifications A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in political science, international relations, development management, or a related field is required. Experience providing substantive advice and support to Member States, working within international or multilateral organizations, and supporting intergovernmental or political processes is essential. Candidates should have experience working on political issues, devising political strategies for senior officials, and managing complex political operations involving multiple stakeholders in conflict or post-conflict settings, including at least two years in UN peace operations or similar environments.
